Decoupled Acoustic and Visual Components in the Multimodal Signals of the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)

چکیده
Because of its parasitic habits, reproduction costs the common cuckoo ( Cuculus canorus ) are mostly spent in pre-laying activities. Female limited to searching host nests and laying eggs, whereas, males spend time performing intense vocal displays, possibly with territorial purpose. This last aspect, together a sexual plumage dimorphism, points both intra- inter-sexual selections operating within this species. One element triggering selection is differential fitness accrued by different phenotypes. Before analyzing possible mechanisms cuckoos, it therefore necessary verify whether there variability among male secondary characters describing quantifying them. Here we aimed quantitatively characterize main two potential candidates traits, i.e., calls shown at perches. During 2019 breeding season, site Po Plain, audio video recorded five We analyzed acoustic variables as well display sequences for correlations. found significant variation that could be clustered into four types. also no visual displays were associated displays; either motionless or soundless active. discuss our results under perspective value brood parasites role habit.

Parentage and host preference in the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus
Microsatellite DNA markers were used to investigate parentage relationships in a population of common cuckoo Cuculus canorus. Thirty adults and 55 nestlings were genotyped at six loci from blood samples collected over a four-year period. To test whether each cuckoo female specialises in parasitising one single host species (Host Preference Hypothesis), the maternal relationships were used to re...
متن کاملBreeding of the Brood Parasitic Common Cuckoo (cuculus Canorus) in Reed Habitats in Nw Vojvodina, Serbia
We monitored the breeding success of the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) in four reed habitats (e. g. clay pits, marsh and fishponds, small canals and large canals) in northwestern Vojvodina (Serbia) between 2009 and 2011 (three breeding seasons). A total of 596 Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) nests were found and monitored. The overall parasitism rate for the study area was 0.12...
متن کاملSex Allocation in Relation to Host Races in the Brood-Parasitic Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)
Sex allocation theory and empirical evidence both suggest that natural selection should favour maternal control of offspring sex ratio in relation to their ability to invest in the offspring. Generalist parasites constitute a particularly interesting group to test this theory as different females commonly utilize different host species showing large variation in provisioning ability. The common...
متن کاملRapid change in host use of the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus linked to climate change.
Parasites require synchrony with their hosts so if host timing changes with climate change, some parasites may decline and eventually go extinct. Residents and short-distance migrant hosts of the brood parasitic common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, have advanced their phenology in response to climate change more than long-distance migrants, including the cuckoo itself. Because different parts of Eur...
متن کاملEgg colour mimicry in the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus as revealed by modelling host retinal function.
Some parasite cuckoo species lay eggs that, to the human eye, appear to mimic the appearance of the eggs of their favourite hosts, which hinders discrimination and removal of their eggs by host species. Hitherto, perception of cuckoo-host egg mimicry has been estimated based on human vision or spectrophotometry, which does not account for what the receivers' eye (i.e. hosts) actually discrimina...
